Ironwork alludes to both the heavy metal music genre and the art of blacksmithing, an ancient craft from prehistoric times. The opening unison riff is a great exercise in the Locrian mode, and the driving momentum continues through many modal shifts, punctuated with riffs and ostinatos and even some basic bariolage for second violins and violas.
